Dominic Thiem v Facundo Bagnis Head to Head

They met once at the tour level and that meeting took place last week in the first round in Umag. Thiem won that match in straight sets.

They also met once at a lower level with Bagnis winning that match last year.

Thiem Is a Former Champion

Dominic Thiem has a fabulous record in Kitzbuhel. The local favourite was a champion here in 2019 and a runner-up in 2014. Thiem was also a semifinalist in 2015 and made it as far as the quarterfinals in 2013 and 2022.

But the former world no. 3 comes into the tournament in dodgy form. He went past the first round in his previous two tournaments in Gstaad and Umag but was beaten in the round of 16 in both the tournaments.

In fact that has been the story for Thiem the entire year. He has not been able to win matches on a consistent basis and failed to make deep runs in the tournaments he has featured in.

Thiem’s best this year include quarterfinal finishes in Estoril and Munich. Plus he was a semifinalist in Mauthausen challenger.

He had beaten Bagnis in the first round in Umag without much trouble last week and therefore will be backing himself to repeat that performance again this week.

Bagnis Comes Through Qualifiers

Facing Thiem will be Facundo Bagnis, who made it to the main draw with back-to-back come-from-behind wins in the qualifying rounds.

The Argentine rallied from a set down to beat local hope Maximilian Neuchrist 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 in the first qualifying round. He then bounced back after dropping the first set against Ivan Gakhov, before beating the Russian 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second qualifying round.

The 33-year-old Bagnis has struggled at the tour level this season and a 2-9 season record is a testament of that.

Overall, the world no. 135 is 21-22 across levels. He has not reached a tour level quarterfinal this season, but has featured in two Challenger quarterfinals in Santiago and Mauthausen.

It will be interesting to see if Bagnis can find some form in Kitzbuhel, where he will be making his third appearance. He is yet to go past the first round and may struggle to do so once again this year.

Thiem v Bagnis Prediction and Tip

Thiem is the superior player; he has been in better form than the Argentine this year and also knows the conditions better than his opponent. Expect him to begin his campaign with a win on Tuesday.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Thiem to win: 1/3
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
