As a native Austrian, Sebastian Ofner is hoping for a really good showing in Kitzbuhel. He’s quite familiar with the conditions and the courts having played here many years. Luckily the Austrian plays his best tennis on clay and has a rather good record on the surface so far this year.
He’s an impressive 51-20 this year and 39-12 on clay which is really good. He’s had strong showings at Roland Garros and other events being active last week in Umag. His run was cut short by eventual champion Alexei Popyrin who beat him 6-4 6-1.
He’s hoping for a return to winning ways in Kitzbuhel as he’ll play as a top 100-ranked player. He’s played here in the past but never moved past the second round which means that a win here could earn him his best-ever outing at the event.
That’s certainly going to be a motivating factor and having played better than Molcan overall should give him confidence.

Molcan Hoping To Pick Up Form
Alex Molcan hasn’t played that well this year as the Slovakian is too up and down. There is very little that would indicate any kind of consistency and that’s a problem because consistency is key in tennis.
He’s out of the top 100 with his ranking likely to slide even further if he doesn’t start winning matches more consistently. A good start was made in the first round as he defeated Luca Van Assche 6-4 6-3 but he’ll need something better against Ofner.
He’s played him twice and lost both times comfortably even though their most recent one was a 3-setter. Conditions favour both players as Molcan likes to play aggressive tennis and the balls fly in Kitzbuhel.
If he comes out with the same precision as he did against the Frenchman, he might give Ofner some trouble. I don’t see it but who knows? He’s 14-11 on clay this year and 20-20 overall.

Even though this appears to be a close one on paper I think Ofner wins this easily.
