Carballes Baena Makes Quick Work of Pella

In what turned out to be a dominating performance, Roberto Carballes Baena trounced Guido Pella in straight sets in the opening round of the Kitzbuhel Open.

Carballes Baena needed just 71 minutes to beat the world no. 199 on Monday. The 30-year-old Spaniard did not face a single break point in the match, while he converted 3 of 4. He also won 92% points on his first serve and dropped just seven points on his serve in the entire match to register a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

He improved his tour level record of 2023 to 18-18.

Carballes Baena had won his second tour level title this season, by beating Alexandre Müller in the final in Marrakech.

The 30-year-old has surprisingly reached just one more quarterfinal this year and that was in Umag last week. However, following a good start against Pella, Carballes Baena will look to build from there.

Baez Knocks Out Medjedovic

World no. 72 Sebastian Baez is also off to a good start, having seen off Serbian qualifier Hamad Medjedovic in straight sets in the opening round.

Medjedovic put up a stern resistance in the first set, breaking back twice after having fallen behind 1-4 and 2-5, but eventually it was the 22-year-old Baez who prevailed in the first set. The Argentine then dominated the second set by breaking his opponent twice and that earned him a 6-4, 6-2 victory in teh opeing round.

Baez has had an up and down season so far, but he did pick up his second ATP title, when he triumphed in Cordoba.

He was also a semifinalist in Santiago and a quarterfinalist in Rio. But his recent form has been dodgy. However, the first round win would have given his confidence a boost.

Carballes Baena v Baez Prediction and Tip

Between the two, Baez seems to have a slight edge. He has been more consistent and has produced better results this season. He will be looking to reach a sixth quarterfinal in 2023.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Baez to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 26.5 games in the match: 5/6
