Cachin Has Had a Strong Run on Clay

Third seed Pedro Cachin has been in wonderful form on clay this season and he will be looking to make an impact in the final tour level clay court event of the season.

The world no. 54 will begin his Kitzbuhel campaign in the second round after receiving an opening round bye.

Cachin is 14-19 at the tour level this season, but when one includes the Challenger tournaments, his overall record improves to 27-24.

Clay has been the most productive surface for the Argentine throughout his career and it’s no surprise that this year as well, he has played most of his matches on the surface and even tasted success.

Cachin won his maiden ATP title at the Swiss Open in Gstaad last month. He also reached the Santiago Challenger final earlier this year, only to finish runner-up in that tournament.

Expect the Argentine to make a strong start in Kitzbuhel.

Ramos-Vinolas Tops Varillas

2019 finalist Albert Ramos Vinolas moved into the second round in Kitzbuhel with a straight sets win over Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru in the first round.

After struggling for most parts of the season, the Spaniard finally found form in Gstaad last month, when he reached his 12th career final but could not add to his four ATP titles after going down to Cachin in the title clash. Ramos-Vinolas suffered further setback in the next tournament in Umag, where he lost in the opening round.

But he put that disappointment behind him as he beat the world no. 77 Varillas 6-1, 7-5 in the first round.

Ramos-Vinolas, who is ranked five places below the Peruvian, saved 8 of 8 break points in the match, while he capitalised on 4 of 12 breaking chances.

The 35-year-old Spaniard improved his season record to 11-21 at the tour level. In addition to the runner-up finish in Gstaad, he was also a semifinalist in Cordoba and a quarterfinalist in Rio.

Can he reach another quarterfinal with a win on Wednesday?
