Noskova Comeback Floors Raina

Linda Noskova ended the determined lucky loser Ankita Raina’s run 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 in an hour and 58 minutes to reach her second quarterfinal in as many weeks on the WTA tour.

The Czech, being cheered by her home crowd, had her back against the wall for a set and a half, recovering from a set and a break down to return to the last eight on home soil for the second year in a row.

The 18-year-old began the match poorly, struggling to find any rhythm in her shots and particularly off her first serve which was massively exposed by Raina’s aggressive first-strike tennis.

Noskova landed 50% of her first serves and won just two out of 10 points from it. Raina was robust and dependable and broke the young Czech three times to win a one-sided first set 6-1.

The second set began brightly for the Indian player who led 3-1 with an early break, but despite losing that lead she broke again for a 5-4 lead.

However, Raina never reached match point when serving for the match, and instead, Noskova broke back. The Czech applied the pressure during the closing stages of the set to level the match, breaking for the set and converting on her third set point.

An uber-focused Noskova broke Raina three times in the space of 36 minutes to claim victory.

Schmiedlova Saves Match Points in Wang Victory

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova fought off two match points in the final set tiebreak to defeat China’s Xiyu Wang 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 in two hours and 52 minutes to advance to her second WTA quarterfinal of the season.

Like Noskova, Schmiedlova played second fiddle for a set and a half before turning it around and getting the win.

Schmiedlova had a tough time breaking down Wang’s defenses despite winning a healthy number of second-return points. Wang broke the Slovak twice to settle the tight first set 6-4.

In the second set, Schmiedlova survived a massive barrage in the third game, saving two break points and multiple deuces to hold, and a game later she broke Wang to take complete control of the set.

Schmiedlova needed to fight off another pair of break points in the fifth game and then extended her lead, and eventually leveled the match when she converted on her third set point by breaking Wang for the third time.

The decider was tough to call despite the Chinese youngster having the match on her racket but was foiled on her attempt to serve for it, and only a tiebreak would separate the two.

It was Wang who established clear daylight taking a 6-4 lead, but could not see off Schmiedlova with two serves of her own. She was made to pay as a few points after that, the Slovak took her match point.
