Pegula Tames Stearns in Opener

Having earned an opening round bye coming into her first tournament since Wimbledon, Pegula was a straight-set winner over tricky opponent Peyton Stearns.

In a match that went on for an hour and 24 minutes, Pegula clinched her quarterfinal berth with a 6-3, 6-4 win against her fellow American.

The first set was a fairly straightforward one for Pegula as she broke her opponent on two occasions and wrapped it up without facing a break-point. It was in the second that things began to get interesting though.

Stearns broke first but was Pegula retaliated with successive breaks to take a 3-1 lead. This joy was short-lived as Stearns broke back to level out at 3-3 but Pegula soon had a chance to serve for the match after she won the next two games in a row.

She was broken yet again before Pegula got the better of her opponent’s serve for the fourth time in the set to march on.

This was Pegula’s first appearance in a hardcourt tournament since making the semifinals at the Miami Open and she would be glad to have made it through.

Svitolina on a Roll

A quarterfinalist at the French Open, a semifinalist at Wimbledon and now having won successive matches in Washington against players who have the pedigree to have both been top-10 ranked ones makes Svitolina seem like she is in the form of her lifetime.

Returning to tennis after her maternity leave, Svitolina was ranked 1344th in the world in April this year.

About a month later, she made it to 540th. And in the same month, Svitolina had broken into the top 200.

Roll on about two months and Svitolina is ranked 27th in the world and the manner in which she is going this could well be a run that sees her break into the top-20 very soon.

Having beaten Victoria Azarenka and Daria Kasatkina in straight sets in successive matches, Svitolina now has the chance to test out the world number three who has had her ups and downs this season.

Pegula v Svitolina Prediction and Tip

While Pegula has done well to retain her number three spot in the world, she has been found wanting at times against players of high quality. And at the moment, Svitolina is playing high-quality tennis for sure, making this an intriguing battle.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 4/5
