Rybakina Survives a Scare

Playing for the first time since her quarterfinal exit from Wimbledon, world no. 4 Elena Rybakina survived a second round scare against the United States’ Jennifer Brady on Wednesday.

Rybakina rallied from a set down to beat the American in a dramatic two-hour-and-36-minute contest to reach the third round at the Canadian Open for the first time in her third attempt.

Rybkina struck 12 aces in the match and won 76% points on the first serve. She was broken twice in the match, as she saved 3 of 5 break poimts and converted 3 of 7 to win the contest 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5) , 6-3.

Thanks to the win, the 2022 Wimbledon champion has now improved her season record to 38-9. It has been a productive season for Rybakina so far. She was a finalist at the Australian Open and picked her first WTA 1000 titles in Indian Wells and Rome. She also reached the final in Miami, but couldn’t complete the Sunshine double going down to Petra Kvitova in the final.

If she win on Thursday, Rybakina will reach her seventh quarterfinal of the year.

Stephens Gets a Free Pass Into Round 3

Sloane Stephens didn’t even have to take the court for her second round match as her opponent, 16th seed Victoria Azarenka pulled out of the tournament due to an injury.

Azarenka had posted on social media that during the warm-ups she “re-injured a lingering injury” which she thought was resolved.

As a result of the Belarusian’s withdrawal, Stephens finds herself in the round of 16 of the Canadian Open for the fourth time. Her best came in 2018 when she finised runner-up to Simona Halep.

Stephens, ranked no. 38 in the world, had begun this year’s Canadian Open campaign with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win over Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina.

Stephens is 19-14 across levels this year. While she won a WTA 125 tournament in Saint Malo, at the tour level, she has reached at least the quarterfinals on just three occasions before, with a semifinal finish in Rabat being her best. Can she reach the season’s fourth quarterfinal on Thursday?

Rybakina v Stephens Prediction and Tip

Rybakina will need to recover quickly from the draining second round contest. In contrast Stephens will be a lost fresh, having got a day off on Wednesday. But given how Rybakina is playing this season, particularly in big tournaments, expect the Kazakh to bring out her A-game once again and edge out the American.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Rybakina to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
