Emil Ruusuvuori v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

Ruusuvuori and Popyrin have never faced off before this.

Ruusuvuori Stuns Rublev in Thriller

In a match in which Andrey Rublev was a 3/10 favourite to progress, Ruusuvuori overcame a plethora of hurdles to oust the world number eight from the competition.

Ruusuvuori was down a break on three separate occasions in the first set with Rublev getting an opportunity to serve for the set at 5-4 and 6-5 but broke right back both times. He was then two set-points down in the tie-breaker that followed, missed four set-points of his own before clinching the opening tie-breaker 12-10.

Rublev didn’t look very comfortable in the second set either, missing another chance to serve out the set at 5-3 but this time around he came back to win it 7-5.

It looked like the momentum could have shifted when Rublev then went 2-0 up in the decider but Ruusuvuori fought back to break him twice. He lost his serve again in the eighth game but this time around the tie-breaker proved to be an easy for Ruusuvuori to handle, with the Finn winning 7-6 (10), 5-7, 7-6 (3).

Can he sustain this level of tennis in round three with Ruusuvuori having lost seven of his nine previous matches before entering this tournament.

Popyrin Gets Jarry Walkover

It’s been a lucky few days for Popyrin after all.

The Aussie would have been packing his bags after losing in the qualifiers to Max Purcell in a hard-fought second qualifying round but was then called up to replace Karen Khachanov in the main draw of the competition.

Popyrin overcame a fellow lucky loser Daniel Altmaier – who had come in for Andy Murray – in the first round and then in the second, he got lucky again when Nicolas Jarry withdrew from their encounter to be with his wife for the birth of his child.

What this means is that Popyrin will be featuring in the third round of a Masters 1000 tournament for the fifth time in his career and the second time this season. The last time he made the third round was at the Italian Open earlier this season and he had beaten Roman Safiullin to make the fourth.

Can he do that again here?

Ruusuvuori v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Ruusuvuori starts off a 4/6 favourite but for us there’s not much between them and the player who does well on the day will come through. Backing a three-setter here.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5
