Fourth seed Elena Rybakina bounced back after losing the first set in the tiebreak to beat Jelena Ostapenko in the second round of the Cincinnati Open.
Rybakina, who lost to Liudmilla Samsonova in the Montreal semifinal last week, missed out on three set points in the opening set tiebreak before conceding the only one that she faced to allow the world no. 20 to take a one-set-to-love lead.
The Kazakh, however, dominated the second, finishing it off by winning five games in a row. She carried the momentum into the final set, where Ostapenko cancelled out an earlier break from Rybakina, only to concede a second break immediately after. Rybakina held on to the lead to score a 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-4 victory.
With the win, Rybakina is now 41-10 in 2023. The Australian Open finalist reached three WTA 1000 finals this year, winning the titles in Indian Wells and Rome and finishing runner-up in Miami.
On Thursday, she will aim to reach a second straight quarterfinal in Cincinnati and an eighth in 2023.

Paolini Beats Bucșa
Qualifier Jasmine Paolini remained strong in the tournament as the Italian knocked out Spain’s Cristina Bucșa in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the round of 16.
Paolini saved 2 of 5 break points and converted 7 of 13 to win the 66 minutes contest 6-1, 6-3.
Ranked no. 43rd in the world, Paolini had also won her first round match in straight sets, beating Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 6-2. She had qualified for the main draw with a three-set win over Rebeka Masarova and a straight sets win over Camila Osorio respectively.
Paolini, who finished runner-up in Palermo, is seeking her third quarterfinal at the tour level. She has also played in two WTA 125 finals this year, winning in Florence and finishing runner-up in Makarska.
