Djere Defeats Michelsen

World no. 34 Laslo Djere is two wins away from a second straight final at Winston-Salem, after the Serb knocked out Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-4 in the third round on Wednesday.

Broken once in the first set, Djere broke twice in the opening set and once in the second to win the contest in an hour and 30 minutes.

The fourth seed had also won his second round match un straight sets, beating Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta 6-3, 6-3.

The 28-year-old two-time tour-level champion has improved his season record to 28-19. He is 9-2 in his last 11 main draw matches, having finished runner-up in Hamburg and a semifinalist in Kitzbuhel. He lost his first qualifying round in Cincinnati last week, but seems to have found his form on hard court just ahead of the U.S. Open.

Last year, he was beaten in the final by Adrian Mannarino, but this year he will be looking to go all the way to the title. A win on Thursday will take Djere into a third tour level semifinal of the season.

Baez Battles Past Vukic

Sixth seed Sebastian Baez battled past ninth Aleksandar Vukic in three sets on Wednesday.

The Argentine, who came to the Winston-Salem Open with a 1-5 season record on hard courts, needed two hours and 11 minutes to see off the Australian and reach a seventh quarterfinal of the season.

The win also extended Baez’s current win streak to seven matches. He is playing his first tournament since winning the Kitzbuhel title earlier this month.

Baez, who scored a come-from-behind win over Daniel Elahi Galán in the second round, had to fight hard for his win in the third round as well. He withstood 12 aces from the Aussie, saved 4 of 9 break points and converted 6 of 10 to advance.

The 22-year-old world no. 42, who also won the Cordoba Open title earlier this year, will be aiming to reach a fourth semifinal of the year on Thursday.

Djere v Baez Prediction and Tip

While both players prefer clay over hard courts, Djere has had better returns from the surface and therefore he will hold slight edge over Baez in the quarterfinal.

  • Low Risk Tip: Djere to win: 1/2 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
