Sabalenka Trounces Burel

World no. 2 Aryna Sabalenka stormed into the fourth round with a straight sets drubbing of Clara Burel in the third round on Saturday.

The Belarusian was not broken in the match, while she converted 5 of 10 breaking chances to beat the Frenchwoman 6-1, 6-1.

The Australian Open champion has now moved to the second week at the N.Y. major for the fourth time in her career and for the third straight year. She was a semifinalist in the previous two years.

Besides winning her maiden major title in Melbourne this year, Sabalenka also reached the semifinals of the clay and grass majors.

Continuing that form at the US Open, Sabalenka has been dominant in all her matches so far. She defeated Maryna Zanevska 6-3, 6-2 in the first round and then knocked out Britain’s Jodie Burrage 6-3, 6-2 in round 2.

Only once has the second seed been broken this week and that was in the first match. She is 47-10 this season and has won three titles from finals. Expect her to keep the rhythm going in the fourth round.

Kasatkina Eases Past Minnen

After scoring back-to-back comeback wins in the first two rounds, no. 13 seed Daria Kasatkina had an easy outing in the third round on Saturday as the Russian eased past Belgium’s Greet Minnen in straight sets.

The 6-3, 6-4 victory earned the Russian a spot in the second week at the US Open for the second time in her ninth attempt. Kasatkina’s previous best was a fourth round finish in 2017. It also matches her best major result of the season, which was a round of 16 finish in roland Garros.

Against Minnen, Kasatkina got the solitary break in the first set and was cruising at 5-1 in the second, when the Belgian tried a comeback bid, winning three games in a row, but Kasatkina regrouped and converted a fourth match point to beat the world no. 97.

The world no. 14 had two tough outings to begin the tournament, rallying past Alycia Parks for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory and Sofia Kenin for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win in the first two rounds respectively.

Can Kasatkina upset the second seed in the next round?
