Daniil Medvedev v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

Medvedev leads the rivalry 4-2, but interestingly the last two matches between the two have been won by the Aussie. Only one of those meetings was this year and that was in Toronto last month with De Minaur winning in straight sets.

Medvedev Ends Baez’s Streak

Third seed Daniil Medvedev ended Sebastian Baez’s 12-match wining streak with a straight sets win in the third round of the US Open on Saturday.

The 2021 champion raced past the Argentine in the first two sets, but faced some stern resistance in the third, before wrapping it up in the tiebreak to march into the second week at the US Open for the fifth consecutive year.

The world no. 3 was a finalist in 2019, made it to the semifinals in 2020 before winning the title by beating Novak Djokovic in the 2021 final. Last year, he went down in the round of 16. But this year he could be going deep again.

Medvedev has won five titles already this season and with three wins at the US Open he has improved his season record to 52-11.

Medvedev began the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 rout of Hungary’s Attila Balázs. He followed it up by beating Christopher O’Connell 6-2, 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2 in the second round.

On Saturday, Medvedev saved 10 of 12 break points that he faced and converted 6 of 9 that he held to beat Baez, who had won the Kitzbuhel Open and the Winston Salem Open in the lead-up to the US Open.

De Minaur Destroys Jarry

2020 quarterfinalist Alex de Mianur is into the fourth round of the US Open for the third time in his career. And he has barely been troubled in the first week.

The Aussie, world no. 13, has been in exceptional form recently, having played in two finals during the North American swing. However, he finished runner-up in both Los Cabos and the Canadian Masters.

De Minaur also featured in two more finals this year, winning his seventh career title in Acapulco and finishing runner-up in Queen’s. Coming into the tournament in that sort of form he was expected to do well and he has lived up to the billing so far.

The Australian defeated Kazakhstan’s Skatov, Timofey 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the first round and then breezed past the next two opponents in no time. First he defeated China’s Wu Yibing 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 and then he demolished the 23rd seed Nicolás Jarry 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

De Minaur wasn’t broken by the world no. 25 in the third round and he converted 6 of 9 break points to win in an hour and 46 minutes.

Can he prevail over Medvedev?

Medvedev v De Minaur Prediction and Tip

It’s expected to be a gripping contest, which could go either way. Both players are in top form this year. While Medvedev is a past champion and tends to go deep in Grand Slam tournaments once he reaches the second week, De Minaur has just one quarterfinal finish in Grand Slams. However, the Aussie has won the last two battles between the two and that would give him a lot of confidence going into this one.

This should be a close contest with Medvedev edging through.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Medvedev to win: 2/5 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 35.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
