Ninth seed Market Vondrousova stormed into the second week of the US Open for the second time in her career after she defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 6-1 in the third round on Saturday.
Although she was broken twice in the opening set, the Czech never looked in trouble. She broke the Russian four times in the first and twice in the second to extend her 10th Grand Slam match in a row.
Vondrousova had beaten Ons Jabeur to lift the Wimbledon title in July.
The left-hander, who also played in the French Open final in 2019, had reached the fourth round at the US Open in 2018. She has never reached a quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows, but given the form she is in at the moment, there is a very good chance of her reaching the last eight this year.
Vondrousova had begun her campaign with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Han Na-lae in the first round and then she defeated Martina Trevisan 6-2, 6-2 in the second round.
The three wins have improved her to 39-12 this season and that record is expected to improve further next week.

Stearns Beats Boulter
Like Vondrousova, American Peyton Stearns too has reached the second week without dropping a set.
Stearns, who knocked out Viktoriya Tomova 6-3, 6-4 in the first round and ousted Clara Tauson 6-3, 6-0 in the second, needed an hour and 35 minutes to beat Britain’s Katie Boulter 6-4, 6-3.
Stearns saved 4 of 5 break points and converted 3 of 12 to knock out the world no. 61.
With the win, the 21-year-old Stearns improved her season record to 42-17 across levels. She had lost in the opening round on her US Open debut last year, but has reached the second week this year. Her previous best in a Grand Slam was a third round finish at the French Open this year.
Vondrousova v Stearns Prediction and Tip
Stearns is in good form and the crowds will be behind her. So she is expected to put up a strong show. However, Vondrousova’s recent form has been vey good and she is on a 10-match winning streak in Grand Slams. The Czech is a heavy favourite in this contest and despite Stearns’ efforts she should get through in straight sets.
