Volynets Has Lost Early Season Momentum

Volynets began the season well. She reached the third round of the Australian Open, her best showing in a Grand Slam to date.

And then, the following month, she reached her first WTA semi-final in Austin.

That run saw her reach a career high ranking, but, maintaining the momentum since then has been harder than the 21 year old might like. With results less easy to come by, her ranking has slipped back, and she has dropped out of the top 100.

She did end a poor run of results by battling through three rounds of qualifying to make the main draw of the US Open.

But any hopes that playing in front of a home crowd in New York would inspire her were ended when she was beaten in straight sets in the first round by Xinyu Wang of China, the world number 39.

She has been given a wildcard into the main draw in San Diego.

WTA Senior Debut for Ngounoue

Born in Washington to parents of Cameroonian nationality. Ngounoue is already a Grand Slam champion at junior level.

She won the girls’ doubles at the Australian Open in 2022, and, earlier this year, she was crowned junior Wimbledon champion in the singles, defeating Nikola Bartunkova in the final.

The previous month she had also won the girls’ doubles at the French Open.

So far, her senior experience has been limited, although, together with her partner Reese Brantmeier, she did reach the second round of the US Open last year in the doubles.

But the 17 year old is now in line to make her WTA debut after coming through qualifying in San Diego.

First she beat Storm Hunter of Australia, a woman ranked 284 places above her in the world rankings, in straight sets, and then claimed an ever bigger scalp in the form of compatriot Claire Liu, the world number 70, again in straight sets.

Volynets v Ngounoue Prediction and Tip

Although Volynets has not been able to match her early season form, she should be too strong for the teenager who will be making her senior tour debut. Ngounoue can enjoy the experience, as the pressure will be off her.

Few expect her to win, so she can play without inhibition.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Volynets to win: 8/15 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 22.5 games in the match: 8/11 (with bet365)
