Ajla Tomljanovic v Taylor Townsend Head to Head

They played twice so far, and both have one victory. The most recent one happened last year in Cincinnati, and Tomljanovic won a close 3-setter.

Tomljanovic Returns To Tennis

Ajla Tomljanovic missed most of this year due to an injury, which only saw her play her first matches in 2023 at the US Open. She won her first match there but retired in the second match without specifying what the issue was. Fans are relieved that she’s already back on the courts, as another injury would have been devastating.

She’s facing a player who will be tough to beat, especially with her lack of matches lately. The courts don’t play as fast, even though the ball tends to fly rather quickly due to the altitude. Her style certainly benefits from these conditions, but she’s lacking the match rhythm, which could be a problem against a player who has been really good lately.

Even their last match in 2022 proved how evenly matched they can be, and expect a similar affair here. Tomljanovic can win, but if she does, it will come after a long battle.

Last year’s Guadalajara experience ended in three sets in the second round against Madison Keys.

Townsend Eyeing Top 100 Return

It’s been a long journey for Taylor Townsend back to the top 100, but she’s almost there. A really strong effort in Guadalajara could certainly get it done, and she’s been playing really solid tennis lately. She’ll never be a Top 10 player, but she can be a really consistent threat, but she needs to play consistently.

Far too often, we see her simply not being consistent enough, and it’s a problem.

She’s 19-14 on the year, and she could have had a better score if she simply managed to hold a high level for the duration of a match. Oddly she’s kind of struggled on hard courts this year, having only a 5-8 record while being really good on clay.

She grew up on hard courts, so that’s mostly this year’s occurrence, as she’s 150-104 on the hard courts in her career. Expect a good effort from her because this is a matchup she can win.

Some might say that she should win it considering the form of Tomljanovic but I’m not willing to go there.

Tomljanovic v Townsend Prediction and Tip

So this is very close, and I expect it to go to three sets which makes the over a pretty good option. I just don’t think either can win in straight sets.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
