Claire Liu v Diana Shnaider Head to Head

These two will battle many times in the future but they haven’t each other yet. This will be their first meeting.

Poor Form From Liu

Claire Liu played really last year, with many expecting her to take a step forward this year but it didn’t happen. She hasn’t been bad by any means, but she hasn’t been that good either. Her score on the year so far is 23-25, which isn’t what you’d expect from a player on the rise.

Hard courts tend to be her best surface because she grew up on them, but even on them, Liu hasn’t played that well. She was in San Diego last week and failed to qualify for the main draw. One win over a player that’s not very good right now and then a rather easy defeat doesn’t fill you with much excitement.

Luckily, she’s facing a player who hasn’t looked very good either. The match will largely depend on whether Liu manages to wear down her opponent. I think she can handle a longer match better than her opponent, and I think that’s the key for her to win.

She will need to wear her opponent down, but it will be tough.

Shnaider In Needs of Wins

It’s been a great start to the 2023 year down under for the Russian but since then, it’s been somewhat of a mixed bag. She’s only 15-15 on the year and actually 5-8 on hard courts, which is strange because she played so well on them during the Australian Open stretch.

We’ve seen her play good tennis and she’s certainly got a bright future ahead, but lately, it’s been shaky. She was in Osaka last week but lost to Yulia Putintseva 6-2 6-3 which isn’t a terrible loss.

Her form beyond that has been really poor for weeks now, so she desperately needs some wins. Can she win this match? Certainly but she’ll need to play a lot longer and be prepared for long rallies because Liu will try to keep the ball in play for as long as possible.

I don’t see her beating Liu in straight sets, but I don’t see her losing in straight sets, either. This just has a long match written all over it.

Liu v Shnaider Prediction and Tip

This is really tough to predict so I’m not going to do that but rather opt for the over because I don’t see this match being a quick one. Lots of long rallies, breaks and games played.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
