Wu Won His First ATP Match on Clay in Rome

After an extremely impressive run in the first quarter, Wu Yiping had a slow start on clay, but he finally managed to register his first ever tour-level victory on clay court last week in Rome.

The Chinese player knocked out Richard Gasquet in the first round in Rome to win his first match on dirt. He went down to Francisco Cerundolo in the second round and so comes to Geneva with a 1-3 season record on clay.

The 23-year-old had earlier this year become the first Chinese man to win an ATP title when he defeated John Isner in the final of the Dallas Open. In the same tournament he had beaten the then-world no. 8 Taylor Fritz to become the first Chinese male player to defeat a top 10 player.

Wu had also reached the final of the Cleveland Challenger prior to winning the Dallas title. Among his other firsts this year, he broke into the top 100 and reached a career-high of no. 55. Currently ranked no. 57, he also won his first round matches in Indian Wells and Miami. He was making a debut in both the tournaments.

Last year he had a 10-2 record on clay, playing in Challenger and ITF tournaments. But this year, he is playing on clay at the tour level and so things are not all that easy. It will be interesting to see if he can get his second win on clay on Monday.

Huesler Is 1-4 on Clay on the Tour This Year

After failing in the qualifying rounds in the two previous occasions, Marc-Andrea Huesler will be making his main draw debut in Geneva this year.

The world no. 82, who finished 2022 on a high, has struggled with poor form in 2023. Baring his two wins at the United Cup and back-to-back wins at the Davis Cup, the Swiss has not won consecutive matches this season.

The left-hander is 8-11 on the tour and 11-14 across levels. On clay he has a 2-5 record this year, with just one win coming on the tour and that was in the first round in Munich. His other win came in a Challenger tournament.

Huesler, who won the Sofia Open last year for his maiden ATP title, has won four of his five Challenger titles on clay. He hasn’t played a lot on the surface at the tour level but his Challenger experience should give him some confidence against the Chinese player.

Wu v Huesler Prediction and Tip

Huesler has played a lot more than Wu on clay. He also has four Challenger titles to his name and two of those came last year. So despite not being in the best of form, Huesler will back himself against the inexperienced Chinese in the first round.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Huesler to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
