Liudmilla Samsonova v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting and that came in the qualifiers of the 2019 Osaka Open. Tomova had won that in three sets.

Samsonova 2-2 on Grass for the Season

Having started off the grass swing on a solid note with a quarterfinal appearance at the Rosmalen Open, Samsonova went into her first round match at the Berlin Open with some confidence under her belt. Unfortunately for her, she was drawn to face the in-form Ekaterina Alexandrova in her opener and that didn’t turn out to be too well.

Samsonova did not last too long, losing 6-4, 6-3 to capitulate to an opening exit, leaving her with some thinking to do before Wimbledon.

More so because she had had to retire from her quarterfinal in Rosmalen because of fitness concerns.

She has now opted to play in this third grass tournament before Wimbledon, hoping to fine-tune her performances on a surface where she has had performances that can best be described as chalk and cheese. In 2021, she had won the Berlin Open and made the fourth round at Wimbledon while in 2022, she finished with a 1-3 win-loss record on this surface.

Tomova Struggling on Grass This Season

Like Samsonova, Tomova has also played in both the grass court competitions held this season before this week. She has, however, unable to put up any kind of a showing that could put her into a frame of mind needed to get the better of her higher-pedigreed opponent.

Tomova was knocked out of the Nottingham Open opener by Elizabeth Mandlik despite starting out as a favourite and then failed to qualify for the WTA Birmingham. It was a late withdrawal from some of the main draw players that allowed Tomova an entry into the tournament as a lucky loser but that didn’t end too well either.

It was Tereza Martincova who ended Tomova’s run in the competition defeating her in straight sets to make it to the second round.

What Tomova will hope is for is to use her overall record on grass as a bit of a starting point, especially after having reached the quarterfinal of the Eastbourne International last year after starting out as a qualifier.

Can she put up a fight against Samsonova?
